5 Screen-Free Activities for Kids
We want to inspire kids to use their creativity and imagination. If you're reading this then you probably do too!
While the past year has made us all rely on screens for work, school, and connecting with friends and family, taking time away from screens is great for your kids' health and creative energy. What better time to do that than Screen-Free Week?
Screen-Free Week is an annual invitation to play, explore, and rediscover the joys of life beyond screens. During the first week of May, thousands of families, schools, and communities around the world will put down their screen-based devices for seven days of fun, connection, and discovery.
We know how important it is to take regular breaks from screens, so here are some activities you can do with your kids this weekend!
1. Organise a Scavenger Hunt
Get out in the fresh air and (hopefully) some sunlight! We’ve all been spending too much time indoors lately and a scavenger hunt is a great way to get the kids out and about.
If you have a Yoto Player, you can tune in to Yoto Daily this Sunday (9th May) to take part in one of Jake's regular Yoto scavenger hunts! Otherwise, pick a creative theme and design a fun-filled scavenger hunt in your garden or local park.
2. Get Creative
Grab some colored pencils, crayons, or chalk and get your kids drawing! You might have them draw funny family portraits or choose characters from their favorite books to draw. Julia Donaldson's Gruffalo makes a fine subject - your kids will love drawing his orange eyes, purple prickles, and terrible teeth!
3. Get Grooving
Put some tunes on and get dancing! A family dance party will put you and your kids in a good mood. Plus there's nothing like a good boogie to wear the kids out a little. You could even create your own dance routine and live your pop star dream!
4. Work Those Green Thumbs
Working with your hands can be very satisfying and you don't need a garden to get started. Buy some seed packets from your local garden store and set up some simple plant pots on a window sill. Your kids will love seeing their hard work pay off when some herbs or flowers start popping their heads up for sunlight!
5. Cook Up Some Family Treats
Cooking brings the family together, especially when things get a little messy. Whether you're whipping up some brownies or trying your hand at homemade sushi (good luck!), the real treat is the bonding time you'll enjoy as you all muck in together.
